United Use Their Heads!

Man Utd 3 - 1 Benfica

Despite having most of the early possession, Man Utd were a goal down after 27 minutes. Benfica's right back, Nelson, thumped a great shot passed Van der Sar, and they moved ahead. However, it seemed to be the wake up call United needed. Ronaldo was on form, without scoring, against the club champions of his native Portugal. He remains a constant threat to any opposition, and seems to have matured significantly since the World Cup.

United were inspired and goals came from Vidic, Giggs and Saha, and they were all headers. The first in the 45th minute was a powerful endeavour by Nemanja Vidic which levelled the proceedings at half time. Giggs got the second from a good cross by Ronaldo in the 61st minute. Then Saha finished it off in fine style after 75 minutes.

The home side survived a scare from the side that put them out last season, and were pleased to be through to the last sixteen. With four English sides and Scotland's Celtic through the scene is set for some exciting football. This is especially so as no teams from the same country are allowed to play each other in the next round. Therefore, there is every chance of an English clash in the semi's, or even in the final in Athens on 23rd May 2007, but others may have different ideas!

Seven Year Itch!

Porto 0 - 0 Arsenal

This result meant that Arsenal topped their group, and are past the first round of the European Cup for the 7th consecutive year. With both sides only requiring a draw to progress, it could be said that the result was predictable!

The match was not a classic by any means, with Porto seemingly the more determined to get a result. However, a goalless draw was how it finished, with nothing much to write or shout about!

Both sides are through to the next round, so they still have it all to play for!
