Bolton 3 - 2 Portsmouth

Nicolas Anelka is in a rich vein of form and scored yet again to make his tally seven goals from eight matches.

There was everything to play for at the Reebok, because this was not so much a battle of the Titans, but of unlikely preseason contenders for next seasons Champions League. Portsmouth had a dream start when Andy Cole's pass found Matt Taylor, whose tally is nearly as good as Anelka's. Taylor fired the ball home and his side were in front after only two minutes play.

Although they continued to press it was Pompey who came under pressure mid way through the first half. In a rare lapse of concentration, James failed to punch clear and Bolton's Faye headed them level on the half hour. Taylor just missed for Portsmouth in the 38th minute, but almost immediately Campo put Bolton ahead in the 40th minute. Shortly after that Cole nearly levelled, but Bolton's keeper kept him out, and the home side were in front at the interval.

Bolton went further ahead in the 62nd minute through Anelka, who punished Pompey's out of sorts keeper for another error. Although Portsmouth continued to be competitive, by the time Andy Cole had nabbed their second goal in the 89th minute, it was too late to catch up. Bolton are an unlikely but deserved third in the Premiership table.
