Blades Cut down Arsenal

Sheffield United 1 - 0 Arsenal

Arsenal were unfortunate to have to travel north with a side weakened by injury. However, Neil Warnock's team were similarly afflicted, but it was their pride and enterprise that won the day.

The Gunners had the best of the early play, and it was some of their biggest guns who exerted the pressure. Captain Gilberto, Van Persie and Rosicky, were all pressing forward, but the Blades weathered the storm, and even turned the tide. Davis combined with Quinn to get the ball to Nade, who beat German international goalkeeper Lehmann, with a great curling shot to put his side in front at half time.

The real drama came twelve minutes after the interval, when United keeper Kenny, seemed to sustain a self inflicted groin injury. Then, in an extraordinary manoeuvre, he swapped his goal keeping attire for Jagielka's shirt who took over in goal. Kenny was replaced by Tonge in the 61st minute.

The Blades responded magnificently to their predicament, which must have made director Sean Bean very proud, particularly as in playing Sharpe he is not bad with a blade himself! For a good half hour United held on with Jageilka in goal and the whole team playing their part. The end result was a great victory over a worthy opponent and fine Christmas holiday entertainment for 32,000 fans.
