Roma Slain by United Gladiators

Manchester United 7 - 1 Roma (agg 8 – 3)

The proud Romans were slain by Manchester United in the Coliseum at Old Trafford. On a night to remember, United surpassed all expectations, by making a quality Italian club look distinctly ordinary.

In a scintillating spell of about eight minutes, first Carrick, then Smith and Rooney, in quick succession, put their side ahead with three quarters of the game still to play. Ronaldo added to the goal fest just before, and then again just after the interval. Carrick made it six for United, before De Rossi got one back for Roma in the 69th minute. That was cancelled out when Evra scored United’s seventh goal in the 81st minute.

It was an extraordinary team effort by United, who gave a devastating display of skill and power. It would be hard to single out a man of the match, after such an outstanding team performance. Of course it was good that Alan Smith bagged the second goal, after his long absence with a horrid leg injury. Ronaldo was yet again United's tormentor in chief, and must be worth his weight in gold, encrusted with diamonds!

On this particular night there were no lesser lights because the whole team shone so very brightly.
