It's Tough At The Top

Man Utd 1 - 1 Middlesbrough

United went ahead when, after only three minutes, Wayne Rooney received a wonderful 30 yard pass from Scholes. The striker took the ball round keeper Mark Schwarzer, and was about to slide it home, when Kieron Richardson nipped in and did it for him. There is little doubt that Wayne would have scored anyway, but he might just agree, better safe than sorry!

After such a great start by the home team, Boro' might have been overwhelmed but they fought back gallantly. Ferdinand experienced a recurrence of a groin injury, but his manager signalled for him to stay on the field. It is reasonable that he should require his moneys worth, from one of his highest paid players, but with hindsight he should have substituted the defender before half time. As it was he was in no position to tackle Mark Viduka, whose superb diving header put his side level, just before the interval.

In the second half both sides had winning chances. Viduka and Boateng could have put Boro' ahead. Solskjaer came on for Alan Smith, and stole the ball from Schwarzer to score a disallowed goal, and was yellow carded for his cheek! Rooney’s late chip didn't quite come off and so the game was drawn, which was a better result for Boro' than for United. They are now only one point ahead of Chelsea, who need to win at Newcastle to keep up the pressure.
