Chelsea Fail To Impress!

Newcastle 0 - 0 Chelsea

Capable opponents denied Chelsea the opportunity to close the gap at the top of the Premiership. All they needed to do was to beat Newcastle, but they could only draw in a goalless game, which was not good enough if they want to remain champions. However, nobody is suggesting that it is easy to beat Newcastle at home.

The Magpies had the better of the first half, but Chelsea came out more determined after the interval. Kalou fed the ball to Lampard, who blasted over in the 47th minute. Then Wright-Phillips set up Drogba, whose shot was way off target. The attack then switched to the other side, and Dyer was only denied by the classy Petr Cech. Joe Cole, who was substituted for Wright-Phillips in the 55th minute, had his chances including a near miss, when he flicked the ball wide in the dying seconds.

Newcastle played well and there were times in the first half when they made Chelsea look ordinary. A draw was a fair reflection of the state of play, but disappointing for a Chelsea side who were unable to take the opportunity to upstage Manchester United, in the race for the Premiership title.
