Gerrard to the Rescue

Not for the first time it was Steven Gerrard who came to the rescue and secured the points for Liverpool. It was very late, in the extra time of full time, when he powered the ball into the net in his own inimitable way. You could say that Liverpool were lucky to win, but the truth is that they are lucky to have a player as dedicated as Gerrard, who would never surrender before the final whistle.

Gareth Southgate will rightly believe that this was one game that his side could have, and should have won. They had gone ahead after 70 minutes and were still in front with about five minutes remaining to be played. Boro' striker Mido, seemed as though he might have done enough, when he came off the bench to drive the ball home from about 30 yards. However, most of the drama was still to come and started in the 86th minute as Jamie Carragher equalized, when he drove the ball in off Pogatetz. Time was running out when Gerrard finished the visitors off to the obvious relief of under the pressure manage, Benitez.

Until the end it had seemed that the visitors might log up their first victory at Anfield for 23 years. Indeed Liverpool seemed not to be quite themselves in the first half. Robbie Keane is having something of a slow start and mis-hit a good chance. At the other end Reina had to be up to the mark to keep out a good volley from Andrew Taylor.

Things continued pretty much the same after the break, with Boro' seemingly holding their own. In fact when Mido scored they had every chance of securing maximum points. Whether they suffered a lack of concentration or what is hard to know, but Carraghers opportunistic goal was perhaps a little lucky. The ball flew in off defender Popagetz and suddenly Liverpool were level, and beginning to look dangerous.

At the end it was left to Gerrard to have the final say. As usual he rose to the challenge and slammed the ball home to bring the game to a dramatic climax, in the dying seconds.
