On the day there was not much to separate these two sides, only Ronaldo and Rooney! Reading had as many chances as United but lacked that certain firepower.


In fact Ronaldo just missed in the first minute. Then he sent another shot wide, and a Tevez shot was saved by Hahnemann, who proved his worth again, when saving a Hargreaves strike from a free kick.


At the other end Reading were very lively without scoring. Van der Sar saved from Lita, and then Kitson seemed sure to score but Vidic was somehow able to block it. Afterwards, the keeper miserably failed to clear, and Kitson again looked set to profit, but again Vidic was there, this time to head off the line.


Giggs came on for Park after the interval, and was soon in the thick of it, with Cisse having to help a beaten Hahnemann. Ronaldo then went close again, but his shot was palmed over the bar. Again the attack switched ends as Hahnemann turned aside Rooney's shot. The striker soon made amends, as possibly against the run of play, he received an accurate pass from Tevez, and volleyed his side into the lead after 77 minutes.


Steve Harpur was denied an equalizer with a shot that was just wide, and then Ronaldo, who else, scored again for United in extra time, but the game was a lot closer than the score line suggested.


Birmingham 0 - 1 Chelsea


In a close fought encounter Birmingham perhaps deserved better. It turned out to be fortuitous that Pizarro substituted Wright-Phillips in the 29th minute, as he scored the only goal of the match, in the 79th minute.


On this occasion Chelsea, who were not at their best, were lucky to get three points.


Fulham 0 - 3 Arsenal


If Arsenal were not quite at full strength, Adebayor was with two powerful headers clinching it, after 19 and 38 minutes. The 6' 4" striker was head and shoulders above anybody in the Fulham defence, and made it look easy, but he is such a big strong player.

Rosicky made it three for the visitors after 81 minutes. Interviewed at the end of the game, Arsenal Wenger commented that he was pleased with his sides performance. You would have to agree they were good - very good.


Newcastle 0 - 0 Bolton


This game was a bit of an anticlimax after all the hype, but at least Newcastle didn't lose. It will be interesting to see how often you can say that in coming weeks, but there is no doubt that the 'Toon' expect King Kevin to deliver.
