Old Habits Die Hard!

It seems that the law of averages dictated that Villa should lose this game, as they have met United four times in the third round stage, in the last seven seasons and lost every one.

Although United were the better side it's goals that count, and there weren't any at half time, so the game was becoming something of a boring affair. Ryan Giggs had the best opportunity of scoring just before the interval, when keeper Carson had all on to stop a shot from Ronaldo. He palmed the ball to Giggs, who seemed somewhat surprised when it landed at his feet, and his shot was wide.

In the second half the United contingent of about 6000 fans were becoming restless, but their chants of Rooney, Rooney, seemed to fall on deaf ears. The England striker has been off with a virus infection, but was introduced after 70 minutes for Park. The substitution provided the spark United and their fans were seeking, but Rooney missed a good chance in a one, two with Ronaldo, which he fired over the bar.

It didn't really matter, because shortly afterwards United went ahead when Ryan Giggs 'nutmegged' Curtis Davis to deliver the ball to Ronaldo, which he slid home to put his side in front after 81 minutes. Then in the 89th minute Rooney delighted his followers, when he fired in a powerful shot from about 20 yards, to stop Villa from proceeding any further with their FA Cup aspirations.

Chelsea 1 - 0 QPR

A below par Chelsea were lucky to go through to the next round, on the back of an own goal when Pizzaro's shot hit the post and then went in after rebounding off Camp's back in the 28th minute.

Shaun Wright-Phillips and Sidwell both missed good chances, but their side had all the luck, as the game was decided by a one goal fluke, and Chelsea are through to the next round.
