EURO 2008 - GERMANYSPAIN!

Germany 0 - 1 Spain

The pain was all Germany's as they succumbed to the superior opposition of Spain.

The score line did not accurately reflect the difference between the two sides. Spain had most of the possession, and that combined with their ball skills made Germany look almost sluggish at times. They simply could not hold onto the ball long enough to do anything useful, and there were few, other than captain Michael Ballack, who came up to the expectations of a German National Football Team.

Of course it is easy to criticize, and you would have to commend Germany for even reaching the final, because there were 14 other sides that didn't. The Germans have a fantastic record in international football competitions, but this was not their finest hour (and a half)! They started off well enough, and for the first fifteen minutes or so had Spain on the back foot. However, Torres pounced in the 33rd minute to score a wonderful goal and from then on it was all Spain.

Torres, of Spain and Liverpool, showed speed and tenacity to beat German defender Phillip Lahm and shoot the ball past Lehmann. In all fairness the German goalkeeper was one of their better players, without whom Spain's superiority would undoubtedly have been reflected in more goals.

Ballack was supposedly not fully fit, and a doubtful starter, but he played a captain's role in his sides performance. However, one man could not be expected to deter the Spanish armada. In any event he was probably less fit after a clash of heads with Marcus Senna. Brave and bloodied he carried on, but to no avail.

Torres's was the only goal of the match, but all in all it was fine team effort that won the day for Spain. They were magnificent throughout Euro 2008 and an absolute joy to watch. The name of the game is entertainment and that is just what the Spanish side provided to billions of onlookers throughout the world. It is strange to know that this was the first time they had won the tournament for 44 years. But they are a young side who deserved their triumph, and the odds will be very short on a repeat performance before too long.
