Real Madrid 3 - 1 Real Mallorca

By securing a La Liga medal David Beckham crowned his four years at Real Madrid, with a fairy tale ending. It was the icing on the cake for Beckham, who has proved to be of real value, on and off the field, to the club he joined after leaving Manchester United. He has cost the Spanish club around £50 million, in transfer fees and wages, but the return on their investment is probably about £300 million, from marketing returns.

Real Mallorca were the first to score, when Fernando Varela struck after 17 minutes, to silence the ardent Madrid supporters. They were further shocked, when prolific scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy, limped off injured after 33 minutes. Beckham went close to equalising when a trademark free kick rattled the woodwork, but at half time Mallorca were in front, and it seemed that Barcelona would be champions, due to their recent superiority in head to heads.

Half way through the second half, Beckham was substituted with on-loan Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes. He immediately changed the game, when he equalised with his first touch. Then Angelos Basinas deflected into his own net and Real were in front. Two minutes later Reyes curled in his second goal to put the game beyond dispute, and secure the championship.

Beckham returned to the pitch, to join in the celebrations, accompanied by his three sons. He was given a hero's send off, together with Roberto Carlos who was playing his last game at the Bernabeu, after 11 years.

Thousands of fans flooded into the centre of the Spanish capital to celebrate what was a late but impressive victory.

Beckham will now transfer his allegiance to Frank Yallop, managing LA Galaxy in Los Angeles. If he continues to be chosen to play for England, and travel thousands of air miles, his new found friend Tom Cruise, who was watching at the Bernabeu, may help to ensure that it does not become a mission impossible!
