Real Madrid 3 - 1 Real Mallorca
By securing a La Liga medal David Beckham crowned his four years at Real Madrid, with a fairy tale ending. It was the icing on the cake for Beckham, who has proved to be of real value, on and off the field, to the club he joined after leaving Manchester United. He has cost the Spanish club around £50 million, in transfer fees and wages, but the return on their investment is probably about £300 million, from marketing returns.
Real Mallorca were the first to score, when Fernando Varela struck after 17 minutes, to silence the ardent Madrid supporters. They were further shocked, when prolific scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy, limped off injured after 33 minutes. Beckham went close to equalising when a trademark free kick rattled the woodwork, but at half time Mallorca were in front, and it seemed that Barcelona would be champions, due to their recent superiority in head to heads.
Half way through the second half, Beckham was substituted with on-loan Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes. He immediately changed the game, when he equalised with his first touch. Then Angelos Basinas deflected into his own net and Real were in front. Two minutes later Reyes curled in his second goal to put the game beyond dispute, and secure the championship.
Beckham returned to the pitch, to join in the celebrations, accompanied by his three sons. He was given a hero's send off, together with Roberto Carlos who was playing his last game at the Bernabeu, after 11 years.
Thousands of fans flooded into the centre of the Spanish capital to celebrate what was a late but impressive victory.
Beckham will now transfer his allegiance to Frank Yallop, managing LA Galaxy in Los Angeles. If he continues to be chosen to play for England, and travel thousands of air miles, his new found friend Tom Cruise, who was watching at the Bernabeu, may help to ensure that it does not become a mission impossible!

Beckham's Golden Balls!

Estonia 0 - 3 England
When Victoria nicknamed David Beckham Golden Balls, she was not wide of the mark, if she was referring to his ability to pass a football! That was no more obvious than it was in Tallinn last night, as the maestro’s pinpoint accuracy played a big part in England’s victory over Estonia.
Of course England were expected to win, but thanks to the return of the ex captain, they did so in some style. It doesn't mean that England's performance was marvellous, but it was businesslike, and of course absolutely necessary if they are to participate in Euro 2008. That is now highly likely, but not yet guaranteed, and there is still work to do.
England began with some purpose, and it was Joe Cole who put them ahead after 37 minutes. His goal came from a Wayne Bridge throw in, that found Peter Crouch who niftily headed towards Cole, who was facing the wrong way. However, he was able to turn and half volley the ball into the net in spectacular style, giving the Estonian keeper no chance. It made a change to see England dominating a game from the start. Beckham had earlier gone close, after Owen had won a free kick. He floated the ball towards goal brilliantly, but it was just wide. Lampard also just missed with a diving header.
Estonia had their moments but they were outclassed. Vladimir Voskoboinikov threatened England's penalty area, but was expertly tackled by Ledley King. Another chance came, to the same Estonian striker, before the break but was thwarted by alert keeper Paul Robinson.
After the break it was all Beckham, and his golden balls! There was a perfect pass, to find Crouch in the 54th minute and he headed home impressively. Eight minutes later another inch perfect cross from Beckham, found Michael Owen, who was back on the scoring trail to nab England's third.
Well done England, it looks as though you will qualify for Europe but don’t take anything for granted, because it was only Estonia you beat. It remains to be seen how you perform when you are back among the big boys!

Beckham – Best In The World!

England 1 - 1 Brazil
Steve McClaren is quoted as saying that David Beckham is the best right-sided midfielder in the world. There will be many fans who are scratching their heads, and be wondering why the ex-England captain was left out of the England side's first nine matches since McClaren was appointed. It doesn’t seem to make sense. Beckham is certainly a very good footballer, and an extremely accurate passer of the ball. More than that, as far as football is concerned he is Mr Showbusiness and make no mistake about it, with the coverage it now gets from world television, football is show business.
Kaka, who was very much involved in defeating Liverpool in the Champions League final, was largely neutralised in this game by Gerrard. He had a good chance after only five minutes but his shot was weak and wide. Robhino then went close, but it was Gilberto who put the Brazilians ahead after 20 minutes. However, the goal was disallowed as he was wrongly judged to be off side, in what was a fortuitous let off for England.
Beckham had an opportunity to put his mark on the game, after Gerrard was fouled. He struck the ball well, and it soared round the wall and onwards towards goal. It would have beaten goalkeeper Helton too, but drifted just wide. Ronaldhino, who was a joy to watch, narrowly missed a goal from a free kick at the other end.
Early in the second half Robinson made a superb save from Ronaldhino. Beckham was playing a good game, and was presented with a further opportunity in the 68th minute. This time he flighted a perfect pass to John Terry, who powerfully headed home. The new England captain was obviously delighted at having scored, and magnanimously praised Beckhams delivery - 'as in a different class'.
Beckham was substituted after 77 minutes, and left the field to a standing ovation. Brazil got a goal back in injury time, when substitute Diego levelled the score. It was a pity, for England that they could not hold on and win the game. Brazil though, played some great football and fully deserved to share the spoils.
