Wigan 3-1 Chelsea

This wasn't supposed to happen! In fact before the match you might have said that this couldn't happen. But it did, and what's more the best team on the day, won.

It's results like this that make football such a fascinating game, unless of course you happened to be a Chelsea fan watching them loose their otherwise unblemished seasonal record. The first shock was when a Titus Bramble header put his side ahead after 16 minutes but that was just a preview of what was to come. There were not many pundits forecasting a home win, and it would have been easy to pass off that first goal as a flash in the pan.

Wigan's opening goal was cleverly developed from a short corner. N'Zogbia beat the Chelsea defence, when an accurate cross allowed Bramble to open the scoring, with a simple but well executed header. The 'Blues' fans expected the home side to be severely punished for their audacity, but it was not to be as the Northerners continued to dominate. In fact Chelsea were lucky to reach the interval with only a one goal deficit, as John Terry was fully engaged to prevent Jason Scotland breaking through. Then Petr Cech had to make a good save from Emmerson Boyce, to prevent a copycat goal from a short corner.

Within a couple of minutes of the restart Drogba had levelled the scores, as he nutmegged the Wigan keeper and the visiting Chelsea fans were back in full voice. However, the situation was short lived when, in the 53rd minute the mighty Cech was deemed to have conceded a penalty. As Rodallega menaced his goal he seemed to trip the Columbian who was almost sure to score. The referee judged the goalkeeper to be the last defender and he was shown the red card. He didn't agree with the decision but his protests were in vain and he had to leave the field. Substitute keeper Hilario replaced Malouda in a damage limitation exercise, but it was not to be, and Rodallega blasted the ball home from the spot to regain the lead.

Even with ten men remaining, it was not beyond the realm of possibilities for Chelsea to grab the initiative, but they never really looked like doing so. In fact they were reduced to nine men when Ashley Cole went off injured in stoppage time, and Scharner put the icing on a Wigan cake with a third goal. His side left the field, to thunderous and well deserved applause, for their first Premiership win against a 'big four' side.

Was England's Win an Italian Job?

England 5 - 1 Croatia

This was a class performance by England, against a lack lustre Croatia. Every England supporter will be delighted that there was no repeat of the sub standard performance four years ago, when Steve McClaren's side were hustled out of the World Cup, by who else, Croatia!

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

England goals came after 7, 18, 59, 67, and 78 minutes, and had the hard to please, English sporting press, singing praises for the Italian manager. Actually, the term 'manager' suits Fabio Capello far better than 'coach' because that's what he does, 'Manage'.

There were two goals for Frank Lampard, including a sweetly struck trademark penalty, for England first goal. Two for Steven Gerrard, still proving himself to be one of the best midfielders in the world, and one for Wayne Rooney. Although Rooney had worked hard all evening his goal was a sitter, after a farcical miss kick by the Croatian keeper. However, he was also responsible for the pinpoint pass that allowed Gerrard to nab his second goal.

The man of the match was Aaron Lennon, who was clumsily and, perhaps, needlessly brought down in the area, to allow Lampard to score from the spot after 8 minutes. Lennon didn't actually score himself, but was much involved in Gerrard's and Lampard's first goals.

This was a fine performance by England, with much credit due to the manager and the players. Their participation in South Africa next year is now assured, but whether they can win the World Cup is a different matter. They will undoubtedly meet more accomplished and determined opposition than was offered by Croatia, who managed a token late goal from the much booed Eduardo. That was a bit unfortunate as he was previously fouled in the area by Johnson, and penalties have been awarded for a lot less.

So, England will be at the party, and for the present, at least, it seems to be very much an Italian job!

Chelsea To Win Premier League!

Chelsea 3 - 0 Burnley

Played four, won four is not a bad start to the season , by anybody's standards, and there are a lot of fans who consider 'The Blues' to be a good bet to take top honours this season. Initially there were those who doubted whether the partnership between Drogba and Anelka would work, but they have been proved wrong with a vengeance. However, Chelsea are not a team of two and seem to have as good, if not better a squad, than any other side in the Premiership.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

This was a magnificent display of football by the home side, but it was Burnley who wasted the first chance when Martin Paterson missed an early opportunity. Against a team of Chelsea's stature you rarely get second chances, and sure enough Nicolas Anelka fired his side into the lead just before half time. Frank Lampard combined with Michael Ballack who headed in the second, and then Ashley Cole sealed it with a might volley to bag a third goal, and poor old Burnley didn't know what had hit them, or perhaps they did!

It should be remembered that newly promoted Burnley had disposed of Everton, and Premier league Champions Manchester United already this season, but this was a different matter and you would have to say that sheer class did tell. Despite a couple of early opportunities falling to McCann and Paterson, the visitors seemed a little overawed in the presence of their illustrious hosts. In fact their goalkeeper was as good as any on their side otherwise the score line could have been more emphatic.

It would be hard to fault any of the Chelsea players for consistency, and they started the second half as they had finished the first. The icing on the cake was provided by Ashley Cole, whose reputation has not come from scoring goals. His volley was set up by Lampard and fairly exploded into the net, to his own and everyone else's delight except Burnley's!

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Make no mistake about it, this really was a top drawer performance by Chelsea. They are going to be very hard to beat this season, especially as Manchester United and Liverpool have got off to a fairly inauspicious start. Arsenal are a bit of a dark horse, and there are pretenders like Manchester City, but if the Londoners can maintain this level of form, and they have both the firepower and the defence to do it, club owner Roman Abramovich will continue to smile, and may even end up laughing!

Man Utd 1 - 0 Birmingham

Wayne Rooney approaches a ton as Manchester United beat Birmingham in their opening Premiership game. He tapped his 99th goal home, when his header from a cross from Nani, rebounded back to him in the 34th minute. It was not an easy victory as Ben Foster was at full stretch to save from Christian Benitez in the 77th minute. However, Michael Owen could have extended his side's lead but missed a good chance in stoppage time.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Rooney seemed to be enjoying himself, but United didn't look as sharp without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Birmingham's defensive intentions were undermined by the persistence of the striker, who was rewarded when he scored what was to be the only goal of the match. It's a good job he put the ball away as Fletcher missed what looked like a good chance to secure maximum points before the break.

Nani was replaced ,with the veteran but able Ryan Giggs, at the beginning of the second half. However, it was that man Rooney ,who again forced a reasonable save from goalkeeper Hart.

Birmingham were not yet done with, and Barry Ferguson was prominent in midfield. Both Fahey and McFadden had chances to level the score but it was not to be. Then Berbatov was denied at the opposite end, when Carsley cleared his shot off the line. It was followed by a penalty appeal from the Bulgarian when Carr appeared to stamp on his foot. Shortly afterwards he was replaced with Michael Owen, who is very much the new boy at Old Trafford.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Foster made a good save from recent Birmingham signing Benitez, and then Rooney came close to making his 100. But it was the unpredictable Owen who should have put the game beyond dispute for a dream start that didn't materialize, as his shot hit the goalkeeper. It was not the greatest start for the Champions, considering what was happening elsewhere, but they bagged maximum points so nobody was complaining.

Netherlands 2 - 2 England

This was a game in which England's defence started of in an almost unbelievably sloppy fashion and they got punished accordingly.

It was a case of England's back four leaving the door open. After 10 minutes, Rio Ferdinand's back pass was woefully short and allowed Dirk Kuyt to enhance his reputation as Liverpool and Holland's Flying Dutchman. He pounced on the short ball, and from a tight angle he fired it into the net, despite a desperate attempt by John Terry to stop it.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Astonishingly, about half an hour later in the 38th minute there was an almost copycat version of the earlier goal. This time it was Gareth Barry who was the culprit as his back pass found Arjen Robben. His shot was blocked by goalkeeper Green, but only as far as Van der Vaart, who easily drove the ball home. Holland appeared to be much superior to their tired England opponents.

With a two goal deficit at half time England had it all to do. They had their chances and hadn't played a particularly bad game up front. Beckham, Rooney and Lampard all played well enough, but they had the stuffing knocked out of them by defensive errors.

Of course the game was a friendly, but should never be thought of as only a friendly because it was still a test of England's mettle. Capello made changes at half time substituting Heskey, Beckham and the hapless Barry, with Defoe, Wright-Phillips and Carrick.

Strangely, Holland wilted in the second half and a smart Jermain Defoe took full advantage. He raced clear after 49 minutes, from a Frank Lampard pass, and drove the ball home off an upright. England were back in the game and beginning to threaten.

Milner came on for Young after 67 minutes and was something of a revelation. Together with Defoe his presence changed the game as he determinedly and strongly pressed forward. He crossed the ball to Defoe, who narrowly missed his second goal when he headed over. It was the same combination that put England level after 77 minutes. This time Milner again found Defoe who made no mistake bagged his second. With 13 minutes to go you would not have bet against him getting a hat trick.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

So, the match was a draw with a pathetic England defence in the first half, being followed by them dominating the second. Holland are a good side but they seemed to run out of steam, and it would seem that both sides have some work to do before they measure up for the World Cup.

United Lose Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United Lose Their Shooting Star - Cristiano Ronaldo

It has been reported that Manchester United have accepted a world record £80 million, for their shooting star Cristiano Ronaldo. It will not be a bad deal for United who paid £12 million when the Portuguese genius joined them in 2003. Of course his football genius was not recognized at that time, except perhaps by the equally remarkable Sir Alex Ferguson, who amongst other qualities is a great spotter of football talent. Ronaldo has improved whilst with United to the extent that he is considered by many to be the best footballer in the world. That is why he is able to command such a high transfer fee and no doubt a salary to match.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Many of us who are interested in football, have marvelled at Ronaldo's ball skills that have been developed and honed, during his spell in the Premier league. Love him or hate him, and there is no doubt that football fans can be a little partisan, he is a sensational football talent, who has thrilled his many English fans with performances on the field. There may be a dark side to Ronaldo's personality, but soccer is a very competitive and combative sport, that can trigger questionable responses in any player. I'm afraid star quality is a bit like that, and compared with the antics of stars in other fields Cristiano could almost be a role model!

There are premier leagues in many football nations but arguably non that quite compare with the English Premier League, especially for raw talent. Eighty million pounds may seem a gigantic amount to pay, but football is a money game, with millions of fans visiting stadiums, tuning in on television, and reading newspapers, magazines etc. Even in a recession, there are some very rich people in the world, and for a few of them, owning a top class football club epitomises their success.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

During the 2007-8 season Ronaldo scored 42 goals for United topping George Best's previous club record for a midfielder. But he is more than a midfielder. He is a play anywhere ball player, free kick taker, and all round attacker, with the stature and presence to intimidate any opposition. Manchester United are big enough, and have the resources to survive without their star player. They remain big players on the world stage of international football. They have a substantial pool of talent, with an additional £80 million to spend.

It will be interesting to see what happens next, because United are sure to meet Real Madrid somewhere down the line, and it will be fascinating to see what kind of reception Ronaldo gets, when he is playing for the opposition, especially when and if he represents the Spanish team at Old Trafford!

FA Cup: Chelsea 2-1 Everton

Gus Hiddink ended a remarkable temporary spell as Chelsea manager, by beating a less renowned but accomplished Everton side, but not without receiving one or two shocks along the way.

Louis Saha fired Everton ahead, by scoring the fastest goal in the history of the FA Cup, after only 25 seconds. It was a dream start for the Northerners, but Chelsea didn't panic and soon started to dominate. Their persistence was rewarded when Didier Drogba headed home from close range after 21 minutes to equal the scores.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Despite having most of the possession, it was not until the 72nd minute that Chelsea went ahead, with a typical Frank Lampard goal. Although he seemed to stumble it made no difference as he powered home a fine shot, to signal that the end was nigh for the Toffees. In fact Chelsea should have been three up, when a spectacular goal by Florent Malouda, was deemed by the referee not to have crossed the line. Of course, referees don't have the advantage of television replays, and it would have been a difficult shot to call, as the ball bounced inside the goal line before bouncing out again. As it happened Chelsea's first two goals were sufficient, but there might have been an outcry if Everton had levelled the scores.

Despite their early advantage, Everton were finding it difficult to keep up with Chelsea, who were rewarded with the opportunistic Drogba goal. Despite there being three Everton defenders in close proximity he rose above them and the ball was being retrieved from the net. Accomplished Everton manager David Moyes, substituted Jacobsen for Hibbert at the break, but Chelsea continued to push forward. Anelka should have done better when presented with a chance of lobbing over the Toffees keeper.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Although the Southerners were on top Everton still had a good chance of turning the tables, until Frank Lampard virtually put the game beyond dispute. There was a hapless bookmaker offering odds of 7-1 about Lampard scoring the next goal after the interval. What a nice little pickup that would have been, but no, I didn't!

All in all, it was a football match that was set alight, with Everton's fantastic record breaking goal. With an estimated 500 million spectators looking in worldwide, it needed to be good, and it was a thoroughly entertaining game without being technically brilliant.

Champions League Final: Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United

The Premier League Champions were very much the underdogs in Rome, in the final of the Champions League. They were unexpectedly, and completely outclassed by Barcelona, in a match that failed to live up to the hype. Certainly Barca were very good, but United were a shadow of the team that has achieved so much. It is not easy to criticize Sir Alex Ferguson, but playing Ronaldo as centre forward, and Rooney on the wing, didn't seem to work.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Ronaldo can play in any position, but Rooney is an out and out centre forward. Contrary to his usual endeavors he was unable to contribute a great deal, and you were left with the feeling that he would have done much better in his usual role. There is not a player in the Premier League who tries harder than Rooney, nor is their anybody less selfish. However, he was neutralized in this game when United could have clearly done with him forcing his way down the middle. That would have left Ronaldo to play his own game, popping up where least expected and frequently scoring into the bargain.

United's best moves came in the first five minutes when it looked as though they might get on top, and stay there. In fact, they could have scored in the first two minutes, when Victor Valdes fumbled a shot from Ronaldo, and Ji Sung Park was moving onto the rebound. However, he was thwarted by Gerard Pique, who ironically had previously played for United. It seemed that Ronaldo was set to prove himself the best player in the world, when he was narrowly off target with two more shots.

The game was turned on its head, after 10 minutes, when Eto scored a good, but far from marvelous goal. Both Vidic and Van der Sar should have done better, but they didn't and the Cameroon striker drove the ball home. The rest of the game was dominated by Barca; their possession and passing was exquisite, as United began to look increasingly desperate. Rooney was marooned on the wing, and the hard working Ronaldo was left with too much to do. He is not as unselfish as Rooney about scoring opportunities, but to be fair, he had no one supporting who half looked like scoring.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Iniesta was good for Barcelona, but it would be unjust to single him out, as they played so well as a team. If this match was to decide whether Ronaldo or Messi is the best footballer in the world, then Messi emerged as the winner. But of course he had much better support, and first Thierry Henri and then Xavi could easily have doubled Barca's lead, before he did. However, it was Messi who rose to the occasion, and fired in a header passed Van der Sar, without giving his taller opponents a look in.

So, it was Barcelona, not Manchester United ,who emerged as Champions of Europe, and possible the world. They had already won the La Liga, and the Spanish Cup but this was a night on which the United Manager and his men on the field had few answers. All that can be said is that they can, and have played much better.

Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona (agg 1-1)

Was this the hard luck story, to beat all hard luck stories, as Iniesta's strike deep into extra time, cruelly sealed Chelsea's fate? How they would have loved to have met Manchester United in Italy, to make it an all English final, but it was not to be, and it is Barcelona who will meet the Premier League champions in Rome.

It had seemed that Michael Essien's 20 yard pile-driver after 9 minutes would see Chelsea through. But a game is never finished until the final whistle is blown, and Chelsea succumbed, to what in boxing terms, might be called a sucker punch. That is to get knocked out at the end of a gruelling match, when a points win had seemed to be a formality.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Unfortunately it was all too much for Didier Drogba, who had been substituted and was on the sidelines due to injury. Amid ugly scenes, he continuously harassed the referee, in an unedifying spectacle. His disappointment was understandable, but this sort of treatment of officials cannot be tolerated, and a suitable punishment will need to follow.

It must have been extremely disappointing for Chelsea who had four penalty appeals dismissed. Until the dying seconds they had defended brilliantly, but in the end it's goals that count, with a distinct advantage for those scored away from home. It must be said that Drogba had his chances to score, but failed to do so. That may have been part of the reason for his later tantrums. He thought he was on the receiving end of some bad refereeing decisions, but despite being supported by Anelka again up front, he didn't get that crucial goal that could have won the day for Chelsea.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Barcelona, were reduced to ten men after 65 minutes, when Abidail was sent off after tangling with Anelka. If their was a time to add to Essien's goal and put the game beyond dispute, it was against the condensed opposition. As it happened, it appeared that Chelsea had held on, in spite of controversial refereeing decisions. But, time had not been called and Iniesta took advantage, to deliver the cruellest of blows. Chelsea were on the canvas, and it was too late to recover.

Arsenal 1 - 3 Manchester United

Can anything or anybody stop Manchester United in their determination to retain the Champions League title?

Arsenal were devastated, when first Ji-Sung Park after 8 minutes, and then Ronaldo after 11 minutes, demoralised them with two quick fire goals. This was not the way it was supposed to be, as the home side started out with most of the possession in the first 7 minutes or so, but that was soon to change, and how! The industrious Park, took full advantage when the hapless Kieran Gibbs, stumbled at a crucial moment, and let him in. It would be hard to name a more alert and energetic player than Park, and it will not be easy for Gibbs to forget that he started the rot.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Three minutes later United were able to double their lead with the sweetest of free kicks from Ronaldo, who was leading the attack from a centre forward position, he seemed to relish. There is not a better striker of free kicks in the game, and after being brought down by Van Persie, he rifled the ball home from about forty yards out. It was a wondrous goal from a wonderful player, some say the best in the world, and it is easy to see where they are coming from.

United played as a team with discipline and flair, and could easily have gone further ahead after 18 minutes when Wayne Rooney forced a smart save from Almunia. Unfortunately, for them Arsenal were being outclassed and the longer the game went on the more it showed.

The second half started, pretty much the same as the first half finished, with United continuing to dominate. They were rewarded for their persistency after 61 minutes, when they delighted their fans with a move involving Park, Rooney, and the redoubtable Ronaldo. It was exquisite football, starting deep in their own half as the United trio sprinted towards the Arsenal goal. In the last seconds the unselfish Rooney delivered the ball to the Portuguese supremo, who simply couldn't miss from that range.

There was no way back for Arsenal, although they did score a goal from a dubious penalty decision, when Fabregas went down to a tackle from Fletcher, who was harshly red carded. It was questionable whether it was even a foul, never mind a sending off decision, but it will keep the luckless Fletcher out of the final in Rome. It was the one blot for United, who are on their way to another milestone, after a glorious display of football.

Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool

It seemed as though Liverpool were about to pull off the impossible when, at half time, they led Chelsea two goals to nil. They had restored the initiative they lost in the first leg at Anfield, which they lost 3-1. So after 45 minutes the goals were level, but if the position had remained so, Chelsea would still have won by virtue of having scored three away goals.

Chelsea were not up to standard in the first half, and it seemed that starting the game in front, became a perverse disadvantage. Liverpool took advantage of the situation, and their first goal from an Aurelio free kick was pure magic. It was one of those rare, and opportune football moments, when a goal is produced out of nothing. Chelsea had plenty of players, in the vicinity of their own goalmouth, to prevent any mishaps. But Aurelio somehow forced the ball to the side of them and miraculously into the net.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Liverpool deserved the penalty they won in the 28th minute, and Alonso fired the ball home from the spot, to punish Ivanovic for an ill timed foul, with his arms around the Spaniards body. That was how the first half ended and Liverpool looked to be the most likely winners. However, Gus Hiddink was not most pleased with his side's first half display and lack of purpose. He must have given them quite a talking to at the interval, and they emerged for the second half seemingly revitalised.

Goals from Drogba after 55 minutes, and Alex 5 minutes later, restored Chelsea's advantage. Reina could have been expected to save Drogba's flick, but Alex's free kick was a thunderbolt, and he had no chance of stopping it. When Frank Lampard scored, in the 76th minute, it was reasonable to assume the game was over. Manager Benitez might have shared that opinion, when he substituted Torres with Ngog, in the 89th minute. But his side thought differently and were not done with.

Lucas pulled one back for Liverpool after 81 minutes, and one minute later, in the blink of an eye, Kuyt scored another. So if they could somehow net one more goal, in the last ten minutes or so, they would win this fascinating seesaw of a match. It was not to be and it was the indomitable Frank Lampard who scored again in the 89th minute, to sew it up and make it a 7-5 aggregate triumph for Chelsea. It was a match to remember, one of the greats, and a feast of entertainment. Is there any wonder that International soccer at large, and the English Premiership in particular, is held in such high regard?

England 4-0 Slovakia

This was a fine display by England, in the lead up to their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, next Wednesday.

Rooney was seen as the man of the match, and there is no doubt that he scored two good goals. However, the first was the result of a pinpoint pass from none other than David Beckham, and the second from an equally good pass from Frank Lampard. The latter was equally impressive when he scored himself, and is always good value for money. So it is always difficult to decide who is the man of the match. If Rooney was a selfish player himself, and reluctant to pass the ball to give others a better chance of scoring, you might think of him as a skilful opportunist. But he is not, and does not, and will always release the ball if there are others with a much better scoring chance, and for that, as much as his own goal scoring ability he is to be applauded.

It was Emile Heskey who scored England's first after 7 minutes, and from there on the writing was on the wall. However, he was injured in the process and had to be replaced by Carlton Cole, who was subsequently replaced by Peter Crouch, and he too was limping around towards the end. So it was a relatively easy win for England, but at the expense of three of their centre forwards becoming unfit.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Beckham came on to rapturous applause at the interval, and it is still a travesty that a manager of McClaren's ability was able to sack him. It is not just that he is very popular, so much as he is instinctively good at what he does, and that is to get the ball in the path of somebody who can put it into the net. Rooney managed that for his first and England's second goal. In football terms Becks is a bit of a national treasure and it was great to see him get his 109th cap for England after McClaren had wanted to see him stuck on 99. Capello is proving to be as good a manager as England have had for a while, although there will be some who might comment that is not saying much.

Slovakia tried hard and had their moments, but the England defence was up to anything thrown at them. James was tested on a couple of occasions, but confidently held the opposition at bay until replaced by Foster at half time.

This was a good display by England, but it will be harder when they meet Ukraine. It would seem that under Capello, they have every chance of competing in next years world cup. That would be good for England and good for international football. England's fans are fortunate enough to see the best international talent every week in the Premier League, but they will feel let down if they are ever again denied the opportunity of seeing the national team compete in a major competition.

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool

It looked as though the writing was on the wall, when Ronaldo scored from the spot in the 23rd minute, after Reina fouled Ji-Sung Park in the box. But if anything it lit Liverpool's fuse, and from there on end they never looked back, and on this occasion were the much better team.

Just five minutes later, Torres stamped his authority on the game, and caught Nemanja Vidic unawares. The defender, inexplicably allowed the ball to fall behind him, believing that he had time to deal with it. Torres thought differently, and in a flash he beat Vidic and thrust the ball past Van der Sar, to equal the score.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

It was Liverpool who were awarded a penalty, when Evra brought down Gerrard, just before half time. The Liverpool captain made no mistake from the spot and shot his side into the lead, and the home fans were beginning to consider the unthinkable. A defeat, by their sometimes-bitter rivals on their own hallowed ground, seemed more than possible!

United were looking uncharacteristically edgy and perhaps a little desperate. So much so that Vidic was sent off for a blatant foul on Gerrard, and Aurelio brilliantly scored from the free kick in the 77th minute, to put his side further ahead.

The score line was looking good for the visitors and seemed almost unassailable. And so it proved to be, when in extra time, an opportunist Dossena, lobbed the ball over Van der Sar. There are no pundits who would have forecast such a result, and it may have been that United were having an off day. However, Liverpool were superb, and on this occasion outclassed the Premier League leaders.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

United were slightly more determined after the break, but when manager Ferguson made a triple substitution in the 73rd minute, it was too late to make any difference. Of course they are still clear at the top of the Premiership, but they will need to play better than this if they are not to surrender their crown to Liverpool or Chelsea!

Liverpool Humiliate Real Madrid

Liverpool 4-0 Real Madrid

Real Madrid are justifiably recognized as one of the best football clubs in the world, which makes their surrender to Liverpool almost inexplicable.

Madrid were thrashed by four goals to nil, (agg. 5-0), and if it had not been for their splendid goalkeeper Camillas, who was easily their best player, the score-line could have been doubled! Liverpool seem to come into their own when they play in the Champions League, but even so this was a remarkable performance. You would not have expected them to so readily outclass a team of Real Madrid's standing.

To rub it in, it was Spaniard Fernando Torres serving his Spanish Manager Raphael Benitez, who started the rot. Prior to the match he wasn't considered to be 100% fit, and required a pre-match injection. It must have been a syringe full of pure energy, considering the performance he delivered.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Torres shot Liverpool ahead after 16 minutes, when he expertly slotted home a pass from Dirk Kuyt. Madrid would say he should have been penalised moments before, for a foul on Pepe, but it was a borderline thing, and would have been a harsh decision.

Twelve minutes later Liverpool were awarded a penalty, when Heinze was penalised, in the area, for handball. There was no intent on Heinze's part, when the ball struck him on the shoulder from short range. It wasn't a foul, and should never have been a penalty, but Liverpool were hardly going to say they didn't want it. Gerrard made no mistake when he drilled the ball home from the spot to put his side two up.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

Real Madrid had their chances, but one of the differences between the two sides was that Liverpool took theirs, and the visitors didn't. Reina had to make saves from Sneijder, and Higuain, but he wasn't seriously tested. Incidentally Reina had suggested that Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world. You may wonder how that could be when he let in four goals. Well, as has already been mentioned, he made some fine saves otherwise it could have been eight, or even ten goals to Liverpool.

After the interval, it seemed reasonable to expect a more determined effort from Madrid. It didn't come, and they were past the point of no return, when Gerrard thumped in his second goal in the 47th minute. Just before the end, Dossena got in on the action, to score Liverpool's fourth goal. The fans were delighted, and roared their approval after a night to remember. The Liverpool fans that is!

Manchester United 4P-1P Tottenham

The score-line looks very impressive but this was a hard fought game that was still a goalless draw after extra time. So it was all down to penalties and that was when United showed their class.

Opportunist United goalkeeper Ben Foster was given a Wembley outing by Sir Alex and proved himself up to the task. When he brilliantly saved the first Tottenham penalty attempt from Jamie O'Hara the writing was on the wall. Their fate was sealed when David Bentley's attempt was skewed wide. Giggs, Tevez, Ronaldo, and Anderson made sure that a fifth attempt was not necessary, and another trophy was on its way to Old Trafford.

As Premiership games go this was not a classic but there is always excitement at the end when penalties decide the outcome. It was a case of 'who dares wins', and United dared, not least because of their superior penalty taking firepower. Other than that a draw was a reasonable outcome. Both sides had their chances, with superstar Ronaldo being more or less contained. He was given a yellow card later on in the game for diving, but it was a highly controversial booking, and it perhaps should have been a penalty. Referees will have to watch these sorts of decisions, because although diving, and other professional fouls have become part of the game, it is grossly unfair to wrongly label players with this sort of misdemeanour.

United started well enough with Gibson, Tevez, and Nani all threatening without hitting the target. Spurs came back into it and forced Foster to make a great save from Lennon after 70 minutes. Ronaldo nearly secured it for United, just before the full time whistle, but his forceful shot ricocheted off the inside of an upright, and extra time needed to be played.

Both sides had extra time chances, but Foster was having a great game and saved a good shot from Darren Bent with his legs. Evra went close to no avail at the other end before the final, final whistle, signalled a penalty shoot out. Giggs led for United, and his colleagues simply followed suit. Following the leader was something Tottenham didn't want to do after O'Hara's shot was saved, and when Bentley missed United had won with room to spare. Not a classic but over two hours good entertainment, with penalties to boot!

Spain Outclass England

Spain 2-0 England

There is arguably no shame in being beaten by the Euro 2008 winners, but this match was a bit of a one sided affair. If England eventually meet the same opposition in the 2010 World Cup, their aims might be quickly extinguished. It is true that England were without such stalwarts as Gerrard, Rooney, and Walcott, but that is a situation that could befall any side. In the big competitions you need to have more than a handful of players who can do the business.

On the plus side, this was England's first defeat in nine games, but it will remind all concerned that there is much work to do, and no room for complacency. The Spanish team remain a power to be reckoned with, and the way they move the ball is a pleasure to watch. They are totally unafraid of passing the ball to players who are tightly marked, demonstrating their justified belief in their own technical ability.

There is an element of luck in any game, and if Agbonlahor's volley had put England in front early in the game, it might have instilled a measure of confidence. As it happened it was just wide, and their position wasn't helped when Heskey was fouled when he in a good scoring position.

If England started off best, their early promise soon evaporated, as Spain confidently took command. They kept possession passing the ball from man to man, and there was precious little the visitors could do about it. In the 36th minute, Euro Golden Boot winner, Villa, put his side in front with an exquisite piece of football. He danced past Jagielka and Terry, before placing the ball past James in the coolest manner possible.

Spain's continuing attacks only served to show that England are a bit lacking in this respect. The midfield too seemed to be controlled by Spain and England's first half goalkeeper James was having a bit of an off day.

Capello introduced five substitutes at half time, including the redoubtable Frank Lampard, and crowd favourite David Beckham, celebrating a record 108 midfield caps, only equalled by the great Bobby Moore. It is not difficult to see why Beckham still represents his country. His accurate passes are something that many of his team-mates should learn from, because you can't score unless the ball is in the right place! He set up Wright-Phillips and Reina needed two attempts to keep him out.

Eight minutes before time Llorente headed home a second to make Spain's lead unassailable. The game was essentially good spirited but Beckham received a yellow card for dissent just before the end. He was being a bit churlish but there is no doubt that he likes to win, and for all of his thirty-three years, he played at least as well as others in the team.

Portsmouth 2-3 Liverpool - Tony Adams Sacked

This was a game that Portsmouth could and should have won. They played well enough but surrendered at the end, to something of a sucker punch, when Fernando Torres introduced late as a not so secret weapon, headed a missile past goalkeeper James.

Most of the action, and all of the goals came in the second half, with Nugent opening the scoring for Pompey in the 62nd minute, targeting the ball under Reina's body. The lead was short lived, as Aurelio levelled the scores with a superb free kick that resulted from a suicidal back pass from Peter Crouch, which may have cost his side the game.

Portsmouth went ahead again in the 78th minute, when Hreidarsson headed home a peculiar goal which Reina, perhaps, ought to have saved. It seemed all the home side needed to do was hold on, against what appeared to be a lack lustre Liverpool performance. Unfortunately the visitors were not done with.

Liverpool began to look dangerous, and in the 85th minute substitute Dirk Kuyt put them level for the second time, in a seesaw sort of game. Manager Tony Adams seemed to be feeling the pressure, as he lashed out with his foot at a seat or something else nearby. It had looked as though his side were going to get all the points but the pendulum was swinging.

In the dying second Torres won the game for Liverpool with a fine header from an accurate pass by Benayoun. The Anfield squad had won the day, seemingly against the odds, although a relieved Benitez might claim that it was all part of a clever plan! As for the luckless Tony Adams it was subsequently announced that he is to be replaced. The writing was on the wall as a result of a string of poor results since the departure of Harry Redknapp. It will be a stiff job for a successor to steer Pompey out of the relegation zone.

Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea

Fernando Torres bagged a pair of late goals, to keep Liverpool in touch with Manchester United at the top of the Premiership. A draw would have been a better result for Sir Alex but his side still look comfortable at the top, and it will possibly be a case of 'catch us if you can' for the rest of the season.

In this particular game a better name for Chelsea, would be 'All at sea', because they don't seem to be playing with the fervour that used to be there. They will need to pull their socks up if they want to threaten the top two. However, in this instance it must be said that the sending off Frank Lampard, for a dubious foul on Alonso, did not help their case. For many spectators it was as much Alonso who was at fault. Although playing with ten men was part of the problem there is little doubt that Liverpool deserved their win, and the outcome would probably have been the same without the referee's assistance.

Benitez would be rightly proud of his side's strong finish, with two goals in two minutes from Torres, rounding off a determined team effort. That they both came nearing the end of play, in the 89th minute and in extra time, when a draw had seemed likely, would be even more of a fillip. But Liverpool had dominated the game and they deserved to finish up with three points.

Petr Cech made a few good saves, otherwise the score line would have been higher, but for all that he didn't look quite so sharp as he used to be. He is still a first class goalkeeper but no longer the best in the world as many previously thought. You could not really judge Pepe Reina's performance at the other end because he had so little to do, and little to save from a non-existent Chelsea attack.

Deco and Drogba, were substituted for Malouda and Anelka, after 69 minutes, and that seemed to instil some urgency into the game, with Kalou having a shot at goal. However, it was a tame effort, easily collected by Reina. Then Torres decided enough was enough with two fine goals in the dying minutes, to suggest to United that at least they won't have things all their own way.

Manchester City and The Money Game

It seems that love is not the only thing that money can't buy! Despite their recently acquired spending power and publicity about being the wealthiest club in the world, City have not yet converted cash into success on the field.

Of course everyone would agree that it is early days, but some of the transfer fees and wages being talked about, ought to guarantee something. Of course Roman Abramovich's purchase of Chelsea, has influenced the clubs rise to a permanent top four, if not top two position, in the Premier League. So it seems that money can equate to success on the field, although it may be that the more a football player is worth, the more temperamental he becomes.

It seems that British transfer record holder Robinho recently walked out, and for one reason or another, the Ka Ka deal will not go through, so it's all become rather complicated. The fees and salary being publicised are like telephone numbers to ordinary mortals. However, it must be remembered that we are thinking in terms of the best football talent on the planet. It must be hard for any manager, earning considerably less than his top stars to harmonize everything.

There is so much importance attached to team work in many job situations, but it is on the football field, perhaps, that team work matters more than ever. Is it possible to get real team work between players when there is so much salary disparity? It was reported that Manchester City were negotiating to buy Craig Bellamy for £10 million, but that palls to insignificance, against the reported £100 million seemingly offered for Ka Ka.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

It may well be that Ka Ka is a better footballer than Bellamy, but is he ten times as good? It means that you could get a whole team of Bellamy's for one Ka Ka. Somebody put it quite succinctly, when they suggested that you would not put Michael Schumacher in a Honda Civic, in a Formula 1 race. The comparison may not be quite right but it is a point well made.

It is great to see star international players like Robinho, Ronaldo, and Torres, alongside our own stars such as Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney, but it does not necessarily promote harmony in the dressing room or success on the field. Still Manchester United haven't done too badly on the other side of town with, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in close attendance. They are all there to be shot at, and it may be that money can buy the necessary weapons, but it takes time and managerial flair to produce the right blend!

Manchester United 3-0 Chelsea

Chelsea Hammered At Old Trafford

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez seems to believe that United receive unequalled official support when they play at home. On this showing, billed as something of a battle of the titans, the only support the team require is that which the players afford each other.

This was a fine team performance by United and Chelsea were well and truly put in their place. They were out-played and out-manoeuvred and you can bet that manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, will agree that his side have work to do. So would former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who watched from the stands and must have had mixed emotions, watching his old squad so easily swept aside.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

In fact United went on the attack from the start. They could, or should have been in front before the excellent Dimitar Berbatov and reliable Ryan Giggs set up Nemanja Vidic, to head his side ahead in first half extra time. It could so easily have been more at the interval, but for United the best was still to come.

It was the irrepressible Wayne Rooney who bagged a second goal after 63 minutes. He received a good ball from Patrice Evra and took what seemed to be the easiest of chances. However, he was in the right place at the right time to add to the visitor's misery.

Berbatov took the third in the 87th minute, with a clinical finish that gave Petr Cech no chance. Chelsea had been humbled and a clear warning was delivered to others who might have thought that a United team, with games in hand, would find it difficult to play 'catch up'.

Unfortunately, the game did not live up to expectations, at least not to those of the Chelsea fans. Even the most biased supporters may agree that the Blues can play better than this. They have some sorting out to do first, such as trying to harmonize the skills of the likes of Drogba and Anelka, in the best interests of the team.

Manchester City Lost in Nottingham Forest

Manchester City 0-3 Nottingham Forest

Despite much publicity about their spending power, City suffered a humiliating defeat that left their fans wondering what on earth is going on! This sort of performance against an able but inferior side, at least financially, almost defies explanation. It's no good simply saying, "that's football", because there is so much at stake and Mark Hughes side will have to do a lot better to weather the storm. It is, perhaps, understandable that players do not give of their best, when they are threatened with the chop, but there is sorting out to be done, and it is becoming a matter of some urgency.

Forest have not been having the best of seasons, so it was all the more remarkable that they brushed City aside so readily. It all started with a fantastic volley by Nathan Tyson from about 20 yards out. The City keeper had no chance of stopping it but it must be said that it resulted from a defensive error by Micah Richards. However, it shot the visitors into the lead after 38 minutes and they never looked back. In fact forward and onwards seemed to be the theme, when Robert Earnshaw doubled the lead 4 minutes later, prior to the end of a very satisfying first half that few, if any, would have predicted.

Please Click Here to visit the Worldsoccer-Online Web Site

New Forest boss, Billy Davies, must have been delighted watching from the stands, as stand in manager John Pemberton, coached the side to a notable victory. It will give the man who took Derby up to the Premiership, something to build on, after a real confidence booster.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, who is usually persistent and reliable, was unfortunately injured after 24 minutes to be replaced by Vassel. It seems he sustained a hamstring injury, so he may be out for some time, and if that is the case he will be sorely missed. It may have been more than coincidence that after he left the field Forest assumed control. City were also missing Robinho and Stephen Ireland, but all the top sides experience such problems, frequently without capitulating.

Wes Morgan made a good stop to prevent Jo pulling one back for City, but it was all over when Richard Dunne's throw-in found Garner to crown a wonderful afternoon for Forest. Billy Davies finished with as much to smile about, as Mark Hughes had to frown upon. Expectations are high at Eastfields, and there is little doubt that the excellent reputation the City manager built up at Blackburn is beginning to look a little tarnished. Patience is a virtue that is not always extended to top football managers!
